The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) installed a system to improve traffic flow and reduce delay at two of the busiest intersections in the Puget Sound Region. The system was installed on State Route 522 at the intersections of SR104 in Lake Forest, and 68th Avenue in Kenmore. Traffic surveillance was achieved using traffic cameras to allow traffic engineers at the Washington State Traffic Systems Management Center (TSMC) to monitor traffic conditions and compensate for unnecessary signal delays by adjusting signal timing at each intersection. Full motion video feed is sent to the Washington State patrol, transit agencies, and local media, in addition to the TSMC. Since fiber-optic communication lines and advanced signal controllers were already available at each intersection, the WSDOT was able to add surveillance to both intersections for $65,000. The project cost included five traffic cameras (mounted on existing traffic signal support structures), telecommunication/video equipment, and labor.
