DalTrans is the Traffic Management Center located on the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Dallas District campus. The center serves as an intelligent transportation systems and traffic communications hub for the region, with operators monitoring traffic conditions round the clock. Capital upgrades in 2021 were its first since opening in 2007. The upgrades aimed to facilitate DalTrans operations and ultimately increase driver safety.
Capital costs for technology upgrades at DalTrans included the following:
- Video wall upgrade ($1.5 million). The video wall, made up of forty 55-inch LCD monitors, replaced aging analog rear projection screens. The wall is 1.5 times larger than the previous display and allows for multiple configurations of high-definition video images. Operators use the wall to monitor roadway conditions, informing their dispatch of patrols and broadcasting of dynamic message signs.
- Digital camera installation ($3.364 million). The digital cameras replaced about 600 outdated analog closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras. Video footage is transmitted back to DalTrans via radios and fiber optic cables, which are then processed and displayed on the video wall.
