Audit Study Reviewed Capital and Maintenance Costs of Seattle DOT CCTV Camera Technology.
Seattle, Washington, United States
The Seattle Department of Transportation’s (SDOT) Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) traffic camera technology is used to monitor traffic conditions and detect and respond to traffic incidents in Seattle. As of June 2020, SDOT operated 284 CCTV cameras. The public can access live camera feeds of traffic conditions at various locations throughout Seattle via the public SDOT website to make informed travel decisions. This study summarized the findings of an audit of the use of SDOT’s CCTVtechnology, which includes the cost data for the use of CCTV technology.
The cost shown below includes fully loaded personnel and ongoing maintenance costs and used USD dollar rate as of year 2020. According to the SDOT Traffic Operations Center Manager, the estimated cost for installing or replacing a CCTV camera was $20,000 per unit. In 2019, camera maintenance costs by the SDOT Traffic Signal Shop totaled $242,268, while in the first two quarters of 2020, costs reached $227,799. However, this may be due to SDOT replacing all necessary cameras in early 2020, as noted by the SDOT TOC Manager, meaning no further maintenance or replacement costs were expected for the remainder of the year.
