Transit Safety is Up Due to Timed Lights

Summary Information

In response to an accident rate 30 percent higher than the state average, Transit Priority Lights were installed along a Transitway at the University of Minnesota. Since the Transitway was first used in 1992 there have been 32 accidents involving buses, other vehicles, and one Rollerblader. After installation of the lights in the fall of 1997, no accidents have been reported. Some drivers feel the new system makes drivers more aware of stoplights and buses.
