Accessible Pedestrian Signal (APS) Equipment Costs Estimated at $7,000 Per Intersection Based on UDOT Estimates.
Utah DOT (UDOT) Installed over 1,000 Touchless APS Crosswalk Buttons with Radar-Based Sensing at 250 Intersections.
Cedar City
Moab
APS are technologies at signalized intersections that provide audible and tactile information to help pedestrians, especially pedestrian with vision or other disabilities, cross streets safely. APS can be activated through physical actions, such as pushbuttons or mobile apps, and deliver audio messages like “wait” and “walk sign is on” when activated to communicate crossing status. UDOT has installed more than 1,000 touchless APS crosswalk buttons at approximately 250 intersections in Cedar City and Moab and is expanding deployment to Salt Lake City, Ogden, Provo, and Logan. UDOT’s APS pushbutton uses radar-based sensing, allowing pedestrians to activate the signal without physically touching the button. Pedestrians can activate APS by pressing the button, waving their hands, or using a UDOT-developed smartphone pedestrian app.
Based on UDOT estimates, APS equipment costs were approximately $7,000 per intersection in 2024, and UDOT has allocated $800,000 annually for the purchase and deployment of APS pushbuttons.
