Study Estimated that Integrating Safety Systems with Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) Can Cost Up to $5,000 Per Truck.
Study on Voluntary Adoption of AEB for Commercial Vehicles Developed an Return On Investment (ROI) Calculator to Estimated AEB Installation Costs for Truck Fleets.
Nationwide, United States
Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) is a vehicle safety technology that engages braking in response to input from radar or other speed sensors. This study outlined barriers to voluntary adoption of AEB for truck fleets, and actions that may mitigate or eliminate these barriers. To quantify the extent of financial barriers, the research team developed a tool to help fleets calculate the Return On Investment (ROI) on advanced safety technologies like AEB. The customizable ROI calculator allows fleets to enter information about their own operations or use national averages.
- This study estimated that integrating safety systems with AEB can cost up to $5,000 per truck.
- ROI calculations for AEB using national averages were performed in this study, for a fleet of 10 trucks, with AEB equipment cost taken as $2,500 per truck, with three-year financing and seven percent annual interest rate. With these assumptions, the net present value of total fleet AEB installation cost was estimated as $21,961.
