Empirical ADAS Truck Crash Analyses Using Onboard Safety Monitoring Systems

Summary Information

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have the potential to reduce or prevent crashes, thus improving traffic safety. This study evaluated the safety benefits and efficacy of ADAS using three years of  real-world driving data collected from trucks using Onboard Monitoring System (OBMS). The OBMS is a system that monitors and collects driving data, including driving exposure (miles, time of day, road type), captures multiple camera views, and uploads 20-second videos and data of trigger events (e.g., ADAS activation, hard deceleration, swerving) to cloud servers. The crash risk difference among trucks with and without ADAS were compared based on four specific ADAS technologies: Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Pedestrian Collision Warning (PCW).

METHODOLOGY

Three years of large volumes of truck data were analyzed, including 54,250 trucks from 117 fleets, 5.72 billion miles traveled. The trucks that participated in this study covered a range of model years from 2005 through 2021. Of the trucks, 65.3 percent were equipped with at least one ADAS feature, of which FCW had the largest share with 62 percent. The collected data included 10,309 crashes and 60,090 near-crashes. The results of this study were based on 9,000 crashes and 9,000 near-crashes analyzed.

FINDINGS

  • The results indicated that, compared to trucks without any ADAS, trucks with FCW (no AEB) were associated with about a 30 percent lower crash rate.
  • Similarly, the results also showed that trucks with AEB (+FCW) were associated with about a 40 percent lower crash rate.
  • Lastly, the study found that trucks equipped with LDW had a 21 percent lower crash rate compared to those without the technology.
