The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York City is undertaking an ambitious project to upgrade its fare collection system called One Metro New York (OMNY). The OMNY system deploys both open-loop and contactless fare payment technologies throughout the MTA system which is substantial improvement upon old fare collection technology.

The MTA reported that the total cost of this upgrade was $640 million dollars as of 2020.
