Summary Information

This presentation provided cost estimates for the implementation of hardware, software, and engineering activities for vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication systems installed at 10 intersections along Lake City – Brothell Way NE (SR 522) near Seattle, Washington to support the nationwide SPaT Challenge initiative.

The goal of the SPaT Challenge is to achieve deployment of Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) infrastructure with SPaT (and MAP) message broadcasts in at least one corridor or network (approximately 20 signalized intersections) in each state by January 2020 with the purpose of introducing infrastructure owners and operators (IOOs) to DSRC-based V2I deployment (procurement, licensing, installation, and operational experience) and demonstrating commitment to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and application developers to encourage their participation.

Typical cost-driver estimates:

  • Hardware
  • Engineering
    • Design Testing ($1000 to $8500 per corridor)
    • Installation/Integration ($2000 to $11,000 per corridor)
    • Lane Closures / Night Work additional
  • Create MAP Data per system ($400 to $1500)
    • Use of Tool additional
    • Local Mapping additional
  • Communications ($4,000 to $40,000 per corridor)
  • O&M ($2,000 to $3,000 per year per intersection)

Proposed system cost for deployment on SR 522:

  • Ten (10) intersections including DSRC Antennas, MAP, On-board Unit (OBU) Modules, and SPaT License: $70,000 to $80,000.
