Cost of installation of e-gates at Newport News Marine Terminal and Norfolk International Terminals.
The Virginia Port Authority installed an electronic credentialing system at three terminals in Virginia. The system uses a badge with an RFID chip to compare the driver and trucking company's information to a database of over 14,000 active port identification records. The officers at the entry gates will ensure that the photo of the ID matches the driver and cameras will record the information of the shipping container on the truck. Upon the truck's exit, the same process will be repeated to ensure that the appropriate drivers and cargo are leaving the port. The project was expected to cost $7.5 million.
