Mirrorless Camera Technology, a Digital Camera-and-Monitor System, for Buses in Massachusetts Costs $6,500 per Camera Kit.

Merrimack Valley Transit (MeVa), a regional transit authority in Massachusetts, piloted and deployed a three-camera mirrorless visibility system on its buses to reduce driver blind spots and improve pedestrian, rider, and operator safety. The system was piloted in 2024 and was subsequently installed on 45 of MeVa’s 75 buses (60 percent of the fleet), as an addition to the existing bus side mirrors.

The installed mirrorless camera kit costs about $6,500 per kit. If the technology is determined to be effective and approved in replacing side mirrors, recurring side-mirror damage costs may be reduced. The camera technology was reported to improve certain field of views, but some found that the monitor visibility needed improvement at night.
