Cooperative Automation Driving System (C-ADS) with Road Weather Management (RWM) with a Lane Closure

Summary Information

Road weather management programs aim to observe, predict and alleviate the impacts of weather on roadways. Providing early alerts and alternate travel routes can help mitigate the effects of hazardous weather conditions for road users. A use case was demonstrated and tested at Summit Point Circuit in West Virginia, where a roadside unit could broadcast traffic control messages to cooperative automation driving system (C-ADS) vehicles to communicate an upcoming closed-lane section caused by weather. 

The use case resulted in the following lessons learned. 

  • Develop methods to address disparities between satellite-based maps and high-definition maps from automated driving systems. 

  • Develop more robust techniques for addressing spatial alignment issues and improving system cybersecurity.

  • Explore the use of cellular communications to provide approaching vehicles with more advanced notice of an upcoming geofence.
