Congestion Pricing system in California saves commuters as much as an hour a day

Variably priced lanes reduce the congestion of roadways by encouraging use of public transportation, car-sharing, consolidation of trips, and simply traveling at less congested times.

Methodology:

Tolls varying by time of day are collected at highway speeds using electronic toll-collection technology. Vehicles are equipped with transponder tags which are read by overhead antennas.


Results:

One such system located in Orange County, California saved commuters on the priced express lanes up to an hour each day along State Route-91.
Expanded to other metropolitan freeways, congestion pricing is expected to save the average commuter along a 5-mile freeway segment up to a half hour each day.
