Spotlight on Connected Vehicle Deployments

Connected vehicle (CV) technologies enable vehicles, mobile devices, and roadway infrastructure to wirelessly exchange data and “talk” to one another. This systemic communication enables vehicles to have a 360-degree awareness, warning travelers to act on detected hazards before an incident can occur. These technologies also offer the potential to enhance mobility and reduce transportation’s impact on the environment.

The USDOT has played an integral part in spurring innovation among early adopters of connected vehicle application concepts through various grant programs, including the Connected Vehicle Pilot Deployment Program and the Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment Program. These deployments are integrating connected vehicle research concepts into practical and effective elements, enhancing existing operational capabilities.
