This journal article examined how appropriate timing of traffic signals can decrease congestion, improve air quality, and reduce fuel consumption. Example retiming programs in Syracuse, New York and Oakland County, Michigan were highlighted.
In Oakland County, Michigan a two-phase project to retimed 640 traffic signals resulted in a benefit-cost ratio of 175:1 for the first phase and 55:1 for the second.
