Summary Information

Summary

The current state of practice of various operating Adaptive Signal Control Technology (ASCT) systems throughout the United States was evaluated by students at the University of Connecticut. Systems analyzed included SCATS, ACS-Lite, and InSync. Working principals, operational characteristics, benefits, and deployment and maintenance costs are all reviewed through a set of surveys and available literature.

Costs

The capital cost of installing ASCT systems on a per intersection basis are summarized in the following table:

System
Capital Cost/Intersection
InSync $25,000 to $35,000
SCATS $25,000 to $30,000
ACS-Lite $8,000 to $12,000

Despite being the most expensive to install, the report also states that InSync was less expensive overall based on two earlier reports and the results from the survey conducted as part of the report.
