Reducing Red Light Running Crashes: A Research Perspective
Summary Information
This paper includes the results of a 1999 survey of drivers in 5 U.S. cities that employ red-light running enforcement cameras and 5 cities that do not use the cameras. The study found that drivers in both groups of cities strongly favor the use of enforcement cameras. In cities currently using the cameras, 80 percent of drivers approved of their use, while in cities that do not have enforcement cameras 76 percent of drivers were in favor of the systems. The 5 cities surveyed that employed red-light running enforcement cameras were:
- Charlotte, North Carolina
- Fairfax, Virginia
- Mesa Arizona
- Oxnard, California
- San Francisco, California
The cities surveyed that did not employ photo enforcement were:
- Arlington, Texas
- Charlottesville, Virginia
- Fresno, California
- Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
- Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina
