Summary Information

This study considered the effects of ATIS (Advanced Traveler Information Systems) deployment on added delay due to the presence of work zones to determine the benefits associated with such technologies through the application of simulations. The study considered a 9-mile segment of I-40 in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina, bounded by Exit 270 (US-15/US-501) and Exit 279 (NC-147).

Methodology

Measurement of the effect of ATIS on added delay due to the presence of work zones was performed using DYNASMART-P, a simulation program. The simulation requires traffic network information as well as ATIS usage and response data, the latter of which was collected via the Triangle Travel Survey.

Benefits

As ATIS usage increases, the additional travel and stop time through work zones decreased compared to the "No Work Zone" case.
  • Additional travel time decreased from 14 percent to 3 percent.
  • Additional stop time decreased from 79 percent to 16 percent.
  • The rate of diversion (percent reduction in vehicles passing the work zone) increases from 0 percent to 19.7 percent as the use of ATIS increases.
